Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Monday, October 9th, 2006

Jamie Dornan is not just a pretty model. The Calvin Klein poster boy is a pretty actor and a pretty musician too— which makes for a lot of pretty.

by Glenn Waldron

The world of male supermodels, though well oiled, is a small one: Marcus Schenkenberg and Mark Wahlberg pretty much exhaust the A-list. With several major ad campaigns and a high-profile movie role, 24-year-old Jamie Dornan may be ready to join this exclusive men’s club, but for now the Belfast native is having none of it. “Me, a supermodel? Nah. I mean, people aren’t really interested in male models that much, are they?” he asks.

Whatever Dornan himself believes, the right people are expressing more than a passing interest. There’s the beyond-impressive array of ad campaigns: Calvin Klein ads in which he appears alongside Kate Moss (“brilliant to be around; such a great laugh”)—the ultimate supermodel template—and David Sims’s seductive black-and-whites for Dior Homme. Then there’s his upcoming part in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. And then, of course, there’s the extraordinarily famous ex-girlfriend (Keira Knightley). Oh, and did we mention that Jamie sings in a band? This boy is a veritable model-slash-everything.

Still, the male supermodels have never reached the celestial celebrity heights their female counterparts have. Not only that, they simply don’t last as long: A decade after Linda’s and Cindy’s and Christy’s careers climaxed, we’re still on a first-name basis with them—something we’ve never had with the guys. Maybe it’s because men’s fashion still doesn’t receive the headlines and the hype that surrounds women’s wear. Maybe it’s because mainstream media is still a bit uncomfortable with portraying men as clotheshorses—or sex objects.

Regardless, when I meet up with Jamie in the private section of a West London bar, he’s managing to look both casual and supermodel-y at the same time: He’s sprawled out on a sofa, chatting with a friend on his phone, and, even though he’s nursing a hangover today, he still looks absolutely impeccable.

Jamie first started modeling after moving to London four years ago. After growing up in the small, close-knit environs of Belfast (his dad is an eminent gynecologist; his mother died when he was in his teens), he started off, as most British male models do, striking cheesy poses for the preteen magazine market. Jamie quickly caught the eye of legendary photographer Bruce Weber. Jamie is quick to acknowledge the role that gay men, from photographers such as Carter Smith to designers like Hedi Slimane, have played in accelerating his career. And with almost half a decade of modeling experience under his belt, he has naturally had plenty of time to adjust to the heightened interest—from both females and males—that such a job inevitably brings his way. “I just love the attention!” he says. “I don’t really mind where it comes from.”

Next up, Jamie is appearing in Sofia Coppola’s much-anticipated Marie Antoinette alongside Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, and Judy Davis. Jamie plays Axel von Fersen, Antoinette’s sometime boy-bangle. “I pretty much ride in on a horse, shag her, go to a couple of parties, have some breakfast, and ride out,” he says. But Jamie is not just another model-turned-actor wannabe. “I did a lot of stage stuff growing up. My auntie runs an amateur dramatic society back in Belfast, so I was doing Chekhov at 12 years old,” he says. Plus, acting is in the blood: His great-grandmother was 1940s movie star Greer Garson (Mrs. Miniver; Goodbye, Mr. Chips). If the film career doesn’t pan out, he can always fall back on his musical talents. Since his late teens, Jamie has been playing in a “Dylanesque” folk-pop band called Sons of Jim with his best friend, David. Having recently signed with management in Los Angeles, they work together at every opportunity.

With so many projects currently in the works, life seems close to perfect for Jamie right now, except in one significant area. “I really need a girlfriend,” he says earnestly. “I can appreciate going out and having fun with…whoever, but there’s a real side of me that needs the relationship part.” After meeting actress Keira Knightley on a shoot, the pair dated for two years. (They still remain good friends.) Girlfriend or not, he’s happy to go wherever life takes him. “I’ve already been dealt a lot of great hands and I just hope that will continue,” he says. “As long as I don’t do anything to fuck it up…”

Jamie the most wanted man in the UK

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Source: Belfast Telegraph

He’s a model, musician and soon-to-be movie star, making his debut in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette next month. And he’s been romantically linked with a bevy of beauties from Keira Knightley to Kate Moss. Maureen Coleman asks: Is Jamie Dornan the UK’s most sought-after man?

Since his split with Keira Knightley last year, Ulster model, movie star and musician Jamie Dornan has been linked with a succession of beautiful women. First there were rumours that he was enjoying a dalliance with actress Sienna Miller, after the couple were spotted cosying up in a London restaurant. Jamie admitted the pair were friends, but denied any whispers of a romance.

After landing a mega modelling contract with Calvin Klein, alongside supermodel and rock chick Kate Moss, speculation started that the Croydon girl had dumped bad boy Pete Doherty for Jamie’s Irish charms. Jamie laughed off the claims and said he wasn’t “cool enough” to date Kate.

A one-smile stretch for Sport Relief run

Friday, July 21st, 2006

It was a mile full of happy faces as hundreds of Ulster runners stepped out from Custom House Square on Saturday in aid of the Sport Relief Mile fundraiser.

Leading the runners was Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez, boxing legend Barry McGuigan and model Jamie Dornan. Charity-minded members of the public from throughout the province made it to Belfast for the short run through the city centre, joined by a host of other well-known athletes and TV and radio celebrities. Local Sport Relief coordinator, BBC sport presenter Denise Watson, said the turnout was surprisingly large.
“We never imagined so many people would take part – it’s the biggest we’ve ever had in Belfast. It’s a great success for Sport Relief,” she said.
The Sport Relief Mile in Belfast was one of 15 similar events being held across the UK on Saturday during a full day of events to mark the culmination of the initiative’s fundraising. One of the biggest money-spinners proved to be the night-long schedule of special programmes on BBC1 and BBC2 on Saturday night, hosted by Gary Lineker, Davina McCall and Chris Evans. Highlights included a Mastermind battle between Big Brother contestants Jade Goody and Chantelle Houghton, and a Footballers’ Wives special.

Charitable stars to go the extra mile

Monday, June 26th, 2006

By Maureen Coleman
13 June 2006

Sporting heroes Lawrie Sanchez and Barry McGuigan will be pounding the streets of Belfast next month for BBC Sport Relief. The former boxing champ and the Northern Ireland manager are the latest to sign up for the Sport Relief Belfast Mile on July 15.

They will join a diverse cast of runners including BBC personality Jackie Fullerton and Ulster model and singer Jamie Dornan who will also be taking part. In addition, Jamie’s band Sons Of Jim, who made their Belfast debut at Auntie Annie’s just over a week ago, will perform at Custom House Square on the day of the event.

The Belfast mile will be one of the 15 flagship events being held across the UK on the big day. It starts from Custom House Square at 11am and there will be live coverage on BBC1. The race is also on between Radio Ulster presenters Gerry Anderson and Stephen Nolan to see which one will be running.

The votes are continuing to fly in for both presenters and at the end of June, the one with the biggest vote will be dusting off his trainers and tracksuit, and joining in the fun. To vote, listeners and readers can log on to Gerry or Stephen’s websites and select who they want to see take part in the mile. Both sites will have a ‘mile-ometer’ to gauge who is setting the pace with the most votes.

Other confirmed runners include X Factor contestant Philip Magee, boxer Brian Magee and athlete Zoe Brown, while among the BBC staff doing their bit for charity will be John Daly and Noel Thompson.

Jamie considered for new role

Monday, June 26th, 2006

Namaste London goes on the floors in July and will be shot in UK and parts of India including Punjab, Kerala and the Himalayas. Shah added that the city of London and the British way of living is the primary focus of his film. “I wanted the fresh perspective of a Westerner while exploring London through the camera and hence we decided on hiring Peter,” he said.

Though reluctant to divulge how much he was paying the Hollywood cinematographer, Shah said, “Peter will contribute immensely to the project and I am sparing no costs.” Shah is also on the lookout for a Hollywood actor to play the second lead in Namaste London and is considering actor Sean Connery’s son Jason Connery and model cum actor Jamie Dornan.

Moss to front Calvin Klein ad campaign.

Monday, April 10th, 2006

Kate Moss is to star in a new ad campaign for Calvin Klein with Keira Knightley’s ex Jamie Dornan, it was announced today.

The supermodel has been signed up as the face of the brand – 14 years after she first appeared in its ads.

She will be featured alongside Dornan in the billboard and magazine campaign this autumn.

The deal is worth a reported £500,000 and proves her career is in better shape than ever following her drugs scandal.

“Kate and the Calvin Klein brand have a long history together and it felt natural to reunite them for this new Jeans campaign, which will inevitably reignite that spark and highlight the sexy, cool essence of both Kate and Calvin Klein,” said campaign creative director Fabien Baron.

The ads will be shot in New York this weekend and the company is throwing an exclusive dinner for the 32-year-old in the US city tonight.

It was the 1992 Calvin Klein ads which turned Moss into a superstar, when she appeared in a series of black and white shots with a bare-chested Mark Wahlberg.

They made the Croydon teenager a household name around the world.

Moss continued to work with Calvin Klein until 1999.

Dornan, who recently split from Knightley after a two-year romance, modelled for Calvin Klein jeans in 2004.

The 23-year-old is now embarking on an acting career and makes his debut as Kirsten Dunst`s love interest in Sofia Coppola`s forthcoming biopic of Marie Antoinette.

He claimed his relationship with Oscar-nominee Knightley ended due to the pressures of fame as she became a major Hollywood star.
