A one-smile stretch for Sport Relief run
It was a mile full of happy faces as hundreds of Ulster runners stepped out from Custom House Square on Saturday in aid of the Sport Relief Mile fundraiser.
Leading the runners was Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez, boxing legend Barry McGuigan and model Jamie Dornan. Charity-minded members of the public from throughout the province made it to Belfast for the short run through the city centre, joined by a host of other well-known athletes and TV and radio celebrities. Local Sport Relief coordinator, BBC sport presenter Denise Watson, said the turnout was surprisingly large.
“We never imagined so many people would take part – it’s the biggest we’ve ever had in Belfast. It’s a great success for Sport Relief,” she said.
The Sport Relief Mile in Belfast was one of 15 similar events being held across the UK on Saturday during a full day of events to mark the culmination of the initiative’s fundraising. One of the biggest money-spinners proved to be the night-long schedule of special programmes on BBC1 and BBC2 on Saturday night, hosted by Gary Lineker, Davina McCall and Chris Evans. Highlights included a Mastermind battle between Big Brother contestants Jade Goody and Chantelle Houghton, and a Footballers’ Wives special.
